    Arrival and a gentler introduction to the sacred city, the Ruwanwelisaya stupa (a dome-shaped Buddhist shrine) and the Sri Maha Bodhi, both visited by bicycle or tuk-tuk (a three-wheeled auto rickshaw) to cover the site's scale comfortably after a morning in the car.

    A four-hour drive north brings you to Anuradhapura, with the afternoon left for a gentler first look at the sacred city before the more demanding climb at Mihintale tomorrow.
