    Met at the airport and driven straight up to Water Garden Sigiriya, a four-hour drive that trades the coast for the Cultural Triangle. The resort sits beneath the rock among its own water gardens, the base for two nights given over to the icons of the triangle, the Rock Fortress, the cave temples of Dambulla, and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.

    The Rock Fortress and the Cultural Triangle

    The frescoes, the Lion's Paw and the summit palace, ahead of the day's heat.

    The cave temples of Dambulla

    The golden painted caves, or the ruins of Polonnaruwa if you'd rather spend the afternoon among the ancient city instead.

    A jeep safari at Minneriya

    For wild elephants, on request, or the lesser rock of Pidurangala nearby for the finest view of Sigiriya itself.

    With the travel day behind you, this is the one full day based at Sigiriya, built around the ascent of the Rock Fortress, the frescoes, the Lion's Paw and the summit palace, ahead of the heat. The afternoon can go to the cave temples at Dambulla or the ruins at Polonnaruwa, with a jeep safari at Minneriya for wild elephants available on request, or Pidurangala nearby for the finest view of Sigiriya itself.

    Into the Hill Capital

    A three-hour drive to Mountbatten Bungalow, a colonial planter's house above Kandy.

    Afternoon

    Peradeniya and the lake

    The royal botanical gardens, or a stroll around Kandy Lake in the cool of the hills.

    Evening

    The Temple of the Tooth at dusk

    The evening ceremony at the spiritual heart of the island, with a Kandyan dance performance available beforehand if you'd like one.

    The drive from Sigiriya climbs into the hills to Mountbatten Bungalow, a colonial planter's house above Kandy, the last royal capital, with time for the botanical gardens at Peradeniya or a stroll around the lake before the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

    Little England in the Hills

    Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, approximately 3h

    Winding up into the high country

    A three-hour drive to Goatfell by Teardrop Hotels, a restored planter's house in cool Nuwara Eliya, the hill town the British called Little England, the road climbing through emerald tea gardens and waterfalls up to the plateau.

    A tea factory and the colonial town

    A visit to a working tea factory and a tasting, then the Hill Club, the racecourse and Gregory Lake.

    Horton Plains and World's End

    An early-morning walk on request, best arranged for the following dawn if you'd like to add it.

    The drive up into the high country climbs through emerald tea gardens and waterfalls to Goatfell, a restored planter's house among the tea estates, with a working tea factory and tasting followed by the colonial charm of the Hill Club, the racecourse and Gregory Lake.

    The Hill-Country Railway

    First class on the hill-country train

    Reserved seats on the scenic line from Nanu Oya, one of the world's great rail journeys, winding down through tea gardens, waterfalls and the Nine Arch Bridge.

    Afternoon

    Arrival at Nine Skies

    Your chauffeur meets the train at Ella station for the short transfer to Nine Skies, a converted planter's bungalow above the valley.

    Evening, optional

    Little Adam's Peak at sunset

    A gentle climb for the view over the valley as the light fades.

    The famous hill-country train carries you from Nanu Oya down through tea gardens, waterfalls and the Nine Arch Bridge to Ella, your chauffeur meeting the train at the station for the short transfer to Nine Skies, with Little Adam's Peak at sunset an easy option for the evening.

    Descent to the South Coast

    Descending to the coast

    A four-hour drive down from the hills to Fort Bazaar, a restored merchant's townhouse within the walls of the Galle Fort.

    Evening

    The ramparts at sunset

    The lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church and the boutiques along the old streets, on arrival at the fort.

    The longest drive of the trip brings you down from the hills to the south coast, arriving at Fort Bazaar in good time for the ramparts at sunset, two final nights inside the walls of the historic Dutch fort.

Included: all five properties on a double basis (7 nights of accommodation), breakfast and dinner daily, cultural site fees at Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, the first-class scenic train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, and a private chauffeur and vehicle throughout. Lunch, liquor and personal beverages, safari jeep fees and guided excursions beyond those specified, highway tolls and any optional activities added en route, and international flights, visas and travel insurance are not included.
