Met at the airport and driven straight up to Water Garden Sigiriya, a four-hour drive that trades the coast for the Cultural Triangle. The frescoes, the Lion's Paw and the summit palace, ahead of the day's heat.
The golden painted caves, or the ruins of Polonnaruwa if you'd rather spend the afternoon among the ancient city instead.
For wild elephants, on request, or the lesser rock of Pidurangala nearby for the finest view of Sigiriya itself.
With the travel day behind you, this is the one full day based at Sigiriya, built around the ascent of the Rock Fortress, the frescoes, the Lion's Paw and the summit palace, ahead of the heat. The evening ceremony at the spiritual heart of the island, with a Kandyan dance performance available beforehand if you'd like one.
The drive from Sigiriya climbs into the hills to Mountbatten Bungalow, a colonial planter's house above Kandy, the last royal capital, with time for the botanical gardens at Peradeniya or a stroll around the lake before the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.
A three-hour drive to Goatfell by Teardrop Hotels, a restored planter's house in cool Nuwara Eliya, the hill town the British called Little England, the road climbing through emerald tea gardens and waterfalls up to the plateau.

The famous hill-country train carries you from Nanu Oya down through tea gardens, waterfalls and the Nine Arch Bridge to Ella, your chauffeur meeting the train at the station for the short transfer to Nine Skies, with Little Adam's Peak at sunset an easy option for the evening.
A four-hour drive down from the hills to Fort Bazaar, a restored merchant's townhouse within the walls of the Galle Fort.
The lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church and the boutiques along the old streets, on arrival at the fort.
The longest drive of the trip brings you down from the hills to the south coast, arriving at Fort Bazaar in good time for the ramparts at sunset, two final nights inside the walls of the historic Dutch fort.

With no travel to account for, a full day to wander the fort itself, whale watching off Mirissa or the stilt fishermen of Weligama Bay in the morning if you'd like an excursion, a cooking class or guided walk through the fort's history in the afternoon, with the beaches of Unawatuna and its turtle hatcheries nearby if you'd rather spend the day on the sand.
