Sri Lanka in December: the luxury traveller's guide
December is the single best month to escape a European or Japanese winter for the south of Sri Lanka. Warm, dry days on the coast, cool clear evenings in the tea country, and Yala's peak safari season all overlap. The weather, explained honestly
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, which is why December is such a strong month. The northeast monsoon brings rain to the east and far north — Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Jaffna — but the south, west and central highlands are firmly in their dry season. Galle, Tangalle, Mirissa, Weligama and Bentota see clear skies most days, with the occasional short evening shower.
In the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura), December is warm and dry, the best window of the year to climb the rock fortresses at sunrise before the heat builds.
The hill country — Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Haputale — is cool and misty in the mornings. Bring a merino layer for early tea-country walks; by midday it is picnic weather.
Why December suits a Northern European or Japanese traveller
You leave 4°C and short days in Stockholm, Munich, London or Tokyo and land into 30°C and 12 hours of daylight. The circadian reset is easier than travelling east to Bali or west to the Caribbean.
The peak season is compressed. Villas and boutique hotels sell out early — we start reserving December stays in July and August for a reason. Booking through a concierge secures the correct suite at the correct property, not whatever is left.
December brings Sri Lanka's most polished service. Chefs, guides, naturalists and drivers are all working their peak weeks, and standards across our vetted properties are at their highest.

Where to go in December
The south coast (Galle → Tangalle) is our default recommendation for a first-time December visitor. Colonial charm in Galle Fort, spectacular hotels along the coast, whale watching off Mirissa from late December, and reliable weather.
Yala National Park is at its very best — dry, animals concentrated around waterholes, leopard sightings peak. Pair it with a tented camp for two nights before moving to the coast.
The cultural triangle in three days: Sigiriya at sunrise, Dambulla cave temples in the morning, Polonnaruwa by bike in the late afternoon. Stay at a single design-led property and move outward.
