Wallawwa's 18th-century manor house has been carefully restored rather than reimagined, keeping its colonial-era proportions, high ceilings and verandahs intact while easing the building into life as a boutique retreat. Seven acres of tropical garden surround it, buffering the property from the road and the airport beyond. The philosophy is unfussy: after a long flight, or before one, guests need space, shade and very little asked of them. Wallawwa is built around that need rather than around spectacle.
Most stays at Wallawwa begin or end within hours of a flight, and the property is built around that rhythm. Afternoon tea and a complimentary drink between five and six arrive without asking. A spa credit covers a first massage, a sound healing session or guided meditation. Guests who want to do more than rest can join a Sri Lankan cooking class in the garden, paddle the shallow channels of Negombo Lagoon by kayak, or take a slow boat through the wetlands of Muthurajawela before the day's heat sets in. Private dining can be arranged in a secluded corner of the garden, away from the open-sided Verandah restaurant.
