The best time to visit Sri Lanka
Two monsoons, one island, and no month when the whole country is washed out.
Last updated 2 August 2026

The single most useful fact about Sri Lanka is that it has two monsoons running on opposite schedules. The Yala monsoon brings rain to the south and west from May to September; the Maha monsoon soaks the north and east from October to January. There is therefore no bad month to visit the island, only a bad month to visit a particular coast.
The practical rule: December to March, travel the south and west. May to September, travel the east. The cultural triangle works most of the year, and the hill country is cool and green throughout, with the clearest mornings from January to April.

December to February
Peak season. Dry, bright and calm on the south and west coasts, warm across the cultural triangle, cold at night in the hills. Book the best villas six to nine months out; Christmas and New Year go earliest.

March and April
Arguably the best-value window. The south is still dry, the hill country is at its clearest, and the crowds thin after mid-January. April brings Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which is worth planning around or into.

May to July
The Yala monsoon arrives on the south-west, so we route east: Trincomalee, Passikudah and Arugam Bay. Yala and Udawalawe are excellent as water sources shrink, and surf season starts on the east.

August and September
The elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla peaks, one of the great wildlife spectacles in Asia. The east coast is still dry, Kandy's Esala Perahera falls in July or August, and the south is quiet.

October and November
The inter-monsoon: short, heavy afternoon rain almost anywhere, and the least predictable stretch of the year. It is also the cheapest, and the island is at its greenest. Best for travellers who mind price more than weather.

Frequently asked questions
+What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
February is the safest single answer: dry on the south and west coasts, clear in the hills, and reliable across the cultural triangle. March is nearly as good and slightly quieter.
+Which is the rainy season in Sri Lanka?
There are two. The Yala monsoon brings rain to the south and west from May to September, and the Maha monsoon hits the north and east from October to January. October and November are wet almost everywhere.
+When is the best time for safari and whale watching?
Yala and Udawalawe are best from February to July, when animals concentrate around remaining water. Blue-whale watching off Mirissa runs roughly November to April, and off Trincomalee from May to September.
+Is it worth visiting Sri Lanka in the off season?
Yes, if you go to the right coast. October and November are genuinely unsettled, but May to September is only off-season for the south, and the east coast in those months is one of the island's best-kept secrets.
+How far ahead should I book?
For December to March, six to nine months for the best villas and lodges, and longer for Christmas and New Year. For May to September, three to four months is usually enough.
