The Sri Lanka honeymoon itinerary
Fewer bases, later mornings, and rooms worth staying in.
Last updated 2 August 2026

A honeymoon is the one trip where the itinerary should be shorter than you think. We build these around three bases instead of five, private villas with plunge pools rather than large resorts, and a rule our designers apply quietly: nothing scheduled before nine in the morning, except the one safari, which is worth the alarm.
The route below keeps a single cultural chapter, one restorative stay in the hills, and five nights on the coast at the end.
The route, day by day
Your itinerary
Day 1
Sigiriya
Arrive and drive to Sigiriya
Met at arrivals, then north to a private villa in the cultural triangle. Dinner served on your own terrace.
Day 2
Sigiriya
Sigiriya, on your own terms
Climb the rock early if you like heights and history, or take a dawn hot-air balloon over the paddies instead. Afternoon at the pool.
Day 3
Sigiriya
Cultural triangle, lightly
The Dambulla caves, a village lunch cooked over firewood, and a sunset jeep safari at Minneriya. Home by dark.
Day 4
Kandy hills
North to the Kandy hills
Three hours south into the hills for a two-night reset at a wellness property: couples' treatments, forest walks, cold clear nights.
Day 5
Kandy hills
A slow hill day
Nothing on the schedule but a long spa afternoon and a valley that fills with mist.
Day 6
South coast
Hills to the south coast
Four hours down to a cliff-top villa or a beachfront pool suite, arriving in time to swim before dinner.
Day 7
South coast
Yala safari, then nothing
The one early start: a private jeep into Yala at dawn for leopard, back to the villa for a late breakfast.
Day 8
South coast
Coast day
Whale watching in season, a private catamaran at sunset, or a day that never leaves the property.
Day 9
South coast
Galle Fort
An afternoon inside the ramparts, jewellers and Dutch-era courtyards, and dinner on the walls.
Day 10
Departure
Departure
Three hours to the airport on the expressway, with a Colombo day room and a late checkout if your flight allows.

Frequently asked questions
+When is the best time for a Sri Lanka honeymoon?
December to March gives the calmest, driest weather on the south and west coasts, which is where most honeymoons end. From May to September we move the coastal week to the east, where the sea is flat and the beaches are near-empty.
+How long should a Sri Lanka honeymoon be?
Ten days is ideal: three bases, one cultural chapter, one restorative stay and five nights on the coast. At seven days we drop the hill country; at fourteen we add a second coast or an island residency.
+Can you arrange private dinners and surprises?
Yes. Beach dinners, in-villa chefs, a photographer for a morning session, cake and flowers on arrival, and vow renewals on the fort walls are all things we arrange regularly. Tell your travel designer what you have in mind.
+Are private-pool villas available across the whole route?
Across most of it. Plunge-pool villas are easy on the coast and in the cultural triangle; in the hills the best properties trade the private pool for a view and a spa, which is usually the right swap.
