The 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary
Cultural triangle, hill country and the south coast, at a pace that still feels like a holiday.
Last updated 2 August 2026

Ten days is the sweet spot in Sri Lanka. It is long enough to see the cultural triangle, the tea country and the south coast without spending your holiday in the car, and short enough to fit a standard two-week window with flights either side. The route below is the one our travel designers build most often: four bases, nine nights, and a deliberate slowdown at the end.
Everything here is private. You travel with your own chauffeur-guide, so the timings below are a rhythm rather than a schedule; if the light is good at Sigiriya you stay longer, and the afternoon shifts with you.
The route, day by day
Your itinerary
Day 1
Colombo
Arrive Colombo
Your chauffeur meets you inside the terminal and drives you to a quiet hotel in Colombo 02 or Colombo 07, around 45 to 60 minutes from the airport. Do nothing more ambitious than dinner and a walk along Galle Face Green.
Day 2
Sigiriya
Colombo to Sigiriya
A four-hour drive north into the cultural triangle, arriving in time for lunch. Late afternoon, a private jeep takes you into Minneriya or Kaudulla for the elephant gathering, which peaks between July and September.
Day 3
Sigiriya
Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla
Climb Sigiriya at first light, before the heat and the crowds, with a guide who can read the frescoes and the water gardens. Afternoon at the Dambulla cave temples, then back to the pool.
Day 4
Sigiriya
Polonnaruwa or a slow day
Cycle the ruins of Polonnaruwa in the early morning, or trade the ruins for a village lunch, a lake safari and an afternoon doing nothing at all. This is the day most guests are grateful for later.
Day 5
Kandy
Sigiriya to Kandy
Three hours south, with a spice-garden stop if you want one. Evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which is far more atmospheric than the midday visit most groups make.
Day 6
Nuwara Eliya
Kandy to the tea country
The best rail journey in Asia runs Kandy to Nanu Oya through the tea fields; we put you in a reserved observation seat and your car meets you at the other end. Afternoon tea-factory visit and a cold, clear highland night.
Day 7
South coast
Tea country to the south coast
A long but beautiful descent, roughly four and a half hours through Ella and Wellawaya to the coast. Arrive by mid-afternoon, swim, and stay put.
Day 8
South coast
Yala or Udawalawe safari
A pre-dawn private jeep into Yala for leopard, or Udawalawe if elephants matter more to you than the leopard lottery. Back at the hotel for a late breakfast and the rest of the day free.
Day 9
South coast
Galle Fort and the coast
Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort in the late afternoon when the light softens, with a guide who knows which Dutch-era houses you can actually go inside. Dinner on the fort walls.
Day 10
Departure
South coast to Colombo airport
The southern expressway makes the airport run around three hours from Galle, three and a half from Tangalle. We build in a buffer and, if your flight is late, a day room in Colombo.

Frequently asked questions
+Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes. Ten days covers the cultural triangle, the hill country and one coast comfortably at four bases. Trying to add the east coast or Jaffna in the same trip is what turns a good itinerary into a driving holiday.
+How much does a 10-day luxury Sri Lanka trip cost?
For a private, fully guided trip at the level we work at, plan on roughly USD 450 to 1,200 per person per night depending on the hotels, with the villa and lodge end of the collection sitting higher. That covers accommodation, private car and chauffeur-guide, safaris, entrance fees and concierge support.
+What is the best time of year for this itinerary?
December to March is the driest stretch for the south and west coasts and works well across the cultural triangle. July to September also suits this route and coincides with the elephant gathering at Minneriya. If you travel between May and September we usually flip the beach section to the east coast.
+How much driving is involved?
No single drive on this route is longer than about four and a half hours, and most are two to four. You have a private car and driver throughout, so stops are yours to call.
+Can this itinerary be changed?
Every Lux Ceylon itinerary is built from scratch around your dates, interests and pace. This route is the starting point we most often adapt, whether that means adding a wellness stay, dropping a ruin, or extending the coast by three nights.
